Liposuction is the removal of unwanted lumps, bulges, and areas of fat using thin suction tubes (cannulae) that are placed into the body fat through small incisions. Liposuction can be used to treat most areas of the body and can be combined with other body contouring procedures.
The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in specific areas.
We use the tumescent technique which significantly reduces blood loss from the procedure. After injecting anaesthetic fluid into the treatment areas a metal cannula attached to a strong vacuum is inserted. This sucks out fatty deposits from the body.
Liposuction is usually performed as day surgery. Dressings are usually kept intact for 1-2 weeks and strenuous activity is restricted in this time. A return to all normal activities is expected by 6 weeks. Garments are recommended for up to 3 months.
It must be remembered that liposuction can be a major surgical procedure often taking many hours to perform, is not an effective weight-loss technique and does not reduce stretch marks or improve the appearance of cellulite.
