The most commonly used cosmetic injections come in two forms: protein formulae injections and dermal fillers. The injections are used to temporarily fill out and smooth facial expression lines and wrinkles to provide a more desirable and youthful appearance.
Anti-wrinkle injections are most effective for treating frown lines, crows feet and lines between the eyebrows. It is a special preparation of a protein for medical use and has been used for cosmetic purposes for many years. Protein formulae injections temporarily paralyse the muscle of facial expression into which it is injected. This smoothes the wrinkles caused by the muscles. The effects start to wear off at about 3 – 4 months.
Dermal fillers work well in the lower face. They are a group of substances used to fill areas of skin to help smooth out wrinkles or increase volume.
No fillers last forever. However, some longer lasting fillers are now available which can last for years and which are suitable for certain patients.
In some cases it may be more appropriate to use the patients own fat as the filler. This is sucked from one part of the body and injected in small amounts to the area being treated.
